About Wayanad:

Wayanad is a very famous district in Kerala state of India and this district was formed in the year 1980, on Nov 1st. This region was formerly known as Mayakshetra. Some lakhs of tourists visits frequently to this famous tourist location of Kerala.

History of Wayanad
As per evidence of archaeological department the forest of Wayanad is about 3000 years old. As per experts view of this department it is also believed that human civilization was present in this zone for minimum and not less than 10 centuries and that too before Christ. Hyder Ali during his period of ruling in Mysore invaded Wayanad and took control over the area. In later part, Tipu sultan handed it over to the British raj after he signed the Srirangapatna treaty.

Must see in Wayanad:

Edakkal Caves: These caves show a small opening in between 2 faces of rock. If you inside the cave you will get to see the carvings of figure of both animals and humans. As per history these beautiful carvings are of prehistoric period. You can enjoy the beauty of the hills once you climb at the top of the hills near to these caves.

Phookot Lake: This is a natural lake where you can visit to enjoy the calmness of the nature. Boating facilities are made available for the tourists.

Thirunelli Temple: This is one of the ancient temples of India dedicated to the devotees of lord Vishnu.
                                        
Kalpetta: This is a very small town of Wayanad district.  Besides this, this place is also the head-quarters of this district. The Kalpetta to Kozhikode distance includes 72km. This town is completely surrounded by huge mountains and coffee plantations. This town is also a famous trading centre for coffee beans and tea. There are also some famous Jain temples located in this town, which attracts tourists in large number.  

Lakkidi: This place is located at a height of 2296ft above the sea level. This town is located nearby to Vythiri. This place is also famous for chain trees. If you want to enjoy dancing in the rain then dont miss this place as this one zone of Kerala state where maximum rainfall takes place.

Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary: This is one of the most popular wildlife reserves in Wayanad District. You can also find various animals like tigers, bison, jungle cats etc.

Vythiri: Vythiri is a very small town which can be easily accessed from Lakkidi. On the way round this town is located at a distance of 11km from the Kalpetta. This town is home to beautiful mountains and valleys.                       

Banasura Sagar Dam: This dam is located 15km to the north-west of Kalpetta. Besides, this is the 2nd largest dam in India. This Sagar dam was constructed on the Banasura Lake which is located in between the Banasura hills. History says that this lake is named after the king Banasura. If you are planning to go for picnic, then visit this place as it truly feels great to watch out the scenic beauty of this place. This dam was constructed by using big boulders and stones. This dam also supplies its water for irrigation and drinking purpose too.

Soochipara falls: Soochipara waterfalls are also known as Sentinel rock waterfalls and it is located near the famous town ‘Meppadi’. This town is surrounded by dense forests and huge hills. Besides this, there is also a pool below the Soochipara falls. Swimming in this pool with your friends truly gives you great kick and enjoyment. It takes few minutes to reach these waterfalls from the town ‘Meppadi’. Besides, Meppadi also looks beautiful with coffee and tea plantations.
        
Sulthan Bathery: Sulthan Bathery is a great town of Wayanad district. This town is formerly known as Ganapathyvattom and it was changed to Sulthan Bathery in the 18th century. This town consists of 2 main Jain temples apart from the popular Mariamman and Ganapathi temples.
