Varkala is located at a distance of 51 kilometers north of Thiruvananthapuram city. Janardana Swami Temple: It is said that the Janardana Swami Temple of Varkala is more than 900 years old. The association of this temple with the Vaishnavaite sect of the Hindus makes it a place of great importance for pilgrims who make a visit here every year.  This temple is also popularly known as “Dakshin Kashi” or "Benares of the South," and it is located very close to the famous Papnasam beach. It is said that having a bath in this beach can wash off the sins.

Varkala’s Tunnel: Another attraction which is a must not miss here is the Varkala Tunnel. This tunnel is a part of the Trivandrum-Shoranur Canalsince the 18th and 19th centuries.

Kappil Lake:  This Lake is located at a distance of 4 Km from the city of Varkala. You can enjoy the backwater boating in this lake. The beach of the lake is covered with coconut tree. The lake meets the Arabian Sea and this point is worth watching to enjoy the scenic view of the nature.

Anjengo Fort: Must for visit for those tourists who prefer to walk down for the urge to explore the beauty of the place. Muthalapuzhi Lake is located just beside this Fort

Sarkara Devi Temple: One of the oldest temple of Varkala city is Sarkara Devi Temple, located at Chirayinkeezhu region. Kaliyoot festival is celebrated in large scale in this temple during the month of March every year.

Kathakali performances in Varkala: we will recommend you to check out the Kathakali performance which takes place in the Varkala Cultural Centre. During the tourist season, these traditional dance performances take place every day from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. You can also watch ancient Indian martial, Kalaripayattu performances at the Sudarsana Kalari Sanghom.
