Srinagar – The City of Beautiful Gardens, Houseboats and Lakes
History of Srinagar
Located on the banks of River Jhelum is the beautiful city of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu And Kashmir State. The history of this city dates back to the 3rd century and is believed to have been established by King Pravarasena II, who then named it Parvasenpur. After that the city came under the rule of several kings from different local dynasties, until the city was acquired by the Mughal King Akbar, after tricking the current ruler Yususf Shah Chak. Later, after the death of Mughal King Aurangzeb, the city was taken over by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab and soon after Maharaja Gulab Singh was appointed as its sovereign king. When India gained independence, the Maharaja refused to merge with either of two newly created countries of India or Pakistan, but was forced to change his decision after the city was attacked by the tribal forces from Pakistan.
