Mirik – A Hot Tourist Destination In The Himalayan Hills
Learning About The Area
Mirik is a small but beautiful tourist place located in the quite hills of Darjeeling District in West Bengal. The place, which is easily approachable, is quite popular for its pleasant climate and natural beauty. The city derives its name from the word Mir-Yok, which in Lepcha language means “place burnt by fire”. At first,  Mirik was essentially a business centre where people from the neighboring areas came for the sale and purchase of things of everyday use. The area was developed into a tourist spot only in the latter half of the 19th century under the tutelage of the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Siddhartha Shankar Roy. The area was finally opened for tourists in 1979, after being inaugurated by the next Chief Minister, Mr. Jyoti Basu. Despite its relatively short history, today Mirik has become a flourishing tourist destination in the region.
