Kurseong – A Hill Station Which Even the British Preferred
Getting To Know the Hill Town
Kurseong is a small hill town located in the Darjeeling district in West Bengal. The town derives its name from Kharsang, a word in Lepcha language, which means “Land of White Orchids” and is an indication of the fact that these beautiful flowers can be found in abundance in this region, during the spring time. Since the ancient times, Kurseong was a part of Sikkim but was later annexed by Nepal in the 19th century. Later during the Gurkha war, the region was restored to Sikkim. The town is also among the oldest municipal areas of Bengal and got this status as early as 1879. The hill station was preferred even by the British as it had a pleasant climate during summer season and unlike Darjeeling, did not become extremely cold during the winters.

Tourist Attractions in the Region
Even during the British rule, Kurseong was popular as arrest town. In the modern times, it is developing as a refreshing tourist destination, primarily famous for its tea estates.  Some of the most popular tourist spots in the region are listed below.

Toy Train Station: Undoubtedly the most popular tourist attraction of this small hill city, the Toy Train Station is located in the heart of Kurseong. Visitors are able to get a ride on the extremely popular Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the “Toy Train”. The train takes the visitors on a tour of the town and during the trip it passes through the bazaars of the town and also provides a view of the scenic beauty of scenic mountains, orchards, streams and waterfalls.

Eagle’s Crag: This is another extremely popular tourist spot in Kurseong and is located only at a distance of one kilometer form the Railway station. The Eagle’s Crag is a high point in the midst of the town that enables visitors to a get a breathtaking view of the beautiful valley located far below. In addition visitors can also view the snow clad peak of Mount Kanchenjunga as well as the naturally beautiful surroundings which are quite well-known for their trekking trails.

Ambotia Shiva Mandir: Among the several famous temples located within the vicinity of Kurseong, Ambotia Shiva Mandir is the most popular one. This Hindu temple located 5 kms away from the main town stands in the midst of the Ambotia Tea Estate. The temple is renowned not only for its religious importance but also because of its scenic locations. Visitors can also view the Landslide of Ambotia from here. It drops down a thousand meters and is located only about a kilometer down the hill. 

Dow Hill: Dow Hill is essentially a collation of multiple tourist attractions, which include a Deer Park, a Forest Museum, a reservoir, and even a small amusement park that is most favored by families and children. The top of the hill provides an enchanting view of the snow capped hills in the backdrop of lush green valleys. Visitors are also able to get a view of the beautiful tea estates, including the Castleton Tea Estate, which is famous for producing the most expensive tea in the world.

Bhangzang Salamander Lake: The beautiful and serene lake is located 14 kms away from the town of Kurseong. It is famous for being the breeding place of a wide range of salamanders and also for its unique green-tinged waters. 

Things to Buy from the destination - Kurseong
Kurseong is largely famous for its different varieties of tea. In addition visitors also love to shop for a wide range of authentic Tibetan artifacts, such as shawls, hand woven carpets, dragon motifs and prayer wheels etc., which are readily available in the local markets.
