Mauni Amavas :

Mauni Amavas- The silent day
Mauni Amavas is considered to be the day of complete silence. It is the day where devotees fast and do not talk to one another. This day is known to calm restless minds, find inner peace and miraculously make everyone happy from within. On this day the sun and moon are believed to conjoin. It is also considered to be one of the most religious and auspicious days where a dip or a bath in the holy waters will wash away all your sins and impurities.
In 2013, Mauni Amavas is celebrated on 10th February.

Hindu mythology
As per the Hindu beliefs, Mauna means silence which is a very important aspect of spiritualism. Mauna is derived from the word Muni or Sanyasi, one who observes silence in the search of inner peace and harmony. This date in February holds a lot of importance to millions of devotees to come together for a holy dip. This tradition of a bath in the holy waters has been going on from centuries, thanks to devotees wanting to keep this belief alive even today.

Other facts about Mauni Amavas
The sought after Kumbh Mela is considered to be the largest gathering of peace in the world. There are more than a hundred million devotees as part of the Kumbh Mela year after year. It is held once every three years in any of the four places namely Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik and Allahabad. Mauni Amavas attracts a relatively large amount of people during this massive Mela. It is believed that over 30 million people took a holy bath during the Mauni Amavas in Allahabad.
The major problem during this holy gathering is the fear of a stampede. There are so many people that managing such a large crowd is simply beyond imagination. At such times, stampede is but natural. This is one of the major concerns of such a pilgrim as the stampedes are so severe that there have been many who have lost their lives due to such an unwelcomed situation.
Despite this, people continue to believe in god and the power of silence during the Kumbh Mela and the Mauni Amavas. There are many devotees who travel from faraway places to be a part of this spiritual gathering. People from abroad are often fascinated by the Indian and Hindu beliefs wherein people leave all their worldly pleasures and devote themselves to god completely during this time.
