This practice of keeping fast to please Lord Shiva is prevalent in many regions like Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, etc. Women keeps this fast in the month of Shravan month according to the Hindu calendar.
This auspicious event begins on July 25, 2016 according to Purnimant Calendar and on August 15, 2016 according to Amavasyant Lunar Calendar this year.
Hindu people refer Lord Shiva as “the Transformer” of the universe and worship this deity with great devotion. There are several names given to Lord Shiva such as Shankar, Mahadev, Bholenath, etc. People worship Him with great respect and faith along with His wife Ma Parvati and His children Kartikeya and Ganesha.
In Sanskrit the word “Shiva” means “destroyer and pure” which literally refers to the Demolisher of ego. Mahadev, which means Great God, is also another name of Lord Shiva. Practice and Significance of Vrat Somvar
People believe that Ma Parvati was deeply in love with Lord Shiva and so she practiced solah somvar vrat with huge dedication and faith and finally she got married to Him. So girls in search of a good life partner or women wishing for a happy married life often keep this fast to please Lord Shiva in order to fulfill their wishes. During Vrat Somvar people worship Lord Shiva and Ma Parvati along with Ganesha and Nandi with Water, Milk, Curd, Honey, Ghee, etc.
One can keep the fast simply every Monday or can practice the fast for every Monday for 16 weeks at a stretch but the customs are same for all. The month of Shravan is very auspicious as this month is very dearer to Lord Shiva. One should keep such fast from the first Monday of Shukla Paksh of Shravan month around June-July for fruitful results.
