Vivah Panchami

Vivah Panchami

Vivah Panchami is a famous Hindu Festival that celebrates the wedding of God Rama and Goddess Sita. Vivah Panchami is celebrated on the 5TH day (‘Panchami’) of the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight) during the ‘Margashirsha’ month in the Hindu lunar calendar. It is celebrated as the divine marriage day of Lord Sri Rama and Maa Sita.

Just like any wedding, the celebrations of Ram Sita Vivah Utsav (or festival) begin several days in advance. The Vivah Panchami festival is mainly celebrated in the Northern part of India, Mithilanchal and Nepal. The event is usually referred to as “Ram Vivah Utsav”.

It is believed that Lord Shri Ram, on the Panchami of the Hindu ‘Margashira ’month visited Janakpur, the birth place of Mata Sita. He broke the ‘Dhanush’ (bow) of Lord Mahesh (Shiva) in the Swayamvar and was then married to the princess of Janakpur, ‘Sita’. This auspicious festival is of great importance in Nepal (at Janakpurdham), where many pilgrims arrive from India and from different parts of the World, as it is believed that Mata Sita got married to Lord Rama (Prince of Ahodhya) here.

The Vivah Panchami day is celebrated with great zeal in the Ayodhya (Lord Ram’s birthplace). The wedding ceremonies are also enacted with the statues of Lord Ram and Mata Sita. The procession (‘baraat’) of Lord Ram is also taken from one temple to another all the way from Ayodhya to ‘Janakpur’ where the marriage takes place in the evening.

Devotees sing various ‘Bhajans’ (religious songs) in order to get the blessings of Lord Ram. One of the famous religious songs sung by devotees of Lord Rama is “Hari Anant, Hari Katha Anant, Mangal Bhawan Amangal Hari”. In the Ramayana and other scriptures, the day of Vivah Panchami is considered to be important and sacred.
