History of Kumbh Mela
According to the Puranas, gods and the demons and the creation of the dawn started “Samudra Manthan”. It means, that churning ocean can profound infinite wealth. When the ocean was churn, one gem was found named “Amrit”. It was believed that a sip of this gem would make any person immortal. This was the main reason, both Gods and Demons fought for it. Gods offered gems custody to the son of Indra, Jayanta. The king of demons Shukracharya, ordered all demons to snatch the gem from Indra. It was believed that the battle was fought for 12 days according to the God’s calendar, whereas the Hindu calendar says it was for 12 years. In order to protect this gem, Indra took rest at 12 places, among 4 places were on the earth. The few drops of gem were spilled on the four earth places which made it as holy place. These four places are Godavari Ghat (Nashik), Har ki Pauri (Haridwar), Prayag (Allahabad) and Shipra Ghat (Ujjain). Hence, this was the reason why Kumbh Mela take place here every 12 years.
Significance of Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela is considered to be the God fearing event, where people from all over the world visit this place to take a dip bath. This festival is not restricted to all distinctions of creed, castes, region or language. Kumbh Mela is different from other congregations. To millions of Hindus, taking bath in Ganga is immortal. They believed that taking bath in this river will purify their souls. It is also believed that participating in this event one can become free from bondage and receive spiritual salvation.
