Guru Arjan Dev’s Punya Tithi

Guru Arjan; (15 April 1563 to 30 May 1606) was the first martyr of the Sikh belief and the 5th of the 11th Sikh Gurus. Born in Goindval, Punjab, he was the youngest son of Bibi Bhani Ji (Mother) and Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji (Father). Bibi Bhani ji was the daughter of Guru Amar Das. He became the 5th Guru on 1st Sept, 1581 after his father’s death.

Guru Arjan Dev Punya Tithi: 16 June 1606

One most important work done by him was the compiling of the Adi Granth. Guru Arjan Dev collected all the deeds of the previous four Sikh Gurus and had written down in the form of verses in the year 1604. He added the teachings of the Muslim and Hindu saints in the compilation into one book, now the Holy Scripture: the Guru Granth Sahib. It is, perhaps, the only writing which still exists in the form of a hand-written manuscript first published by the Guru.

While in the year 1606, he was punished by the Akbar's eldest son and Mughal emperor Jagangir for refusing to remove the Muslim Saint’s teachings from the compilation, who tortured the Guru the five days of unrelenting torture, eventually led to his death. Since 1606, his martyrdom has been observed annually on June 16 by the Sikhs.

Guru Arjan Dev passed the divine light to his son Guru Har Gobind before he died, as the next Guru. He also founded other cities like Kartarpur and Taran. Guru Arjan Dev also organized a system called masand, where a group of representatives taught and spread the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and moral values and they received a partial offering of Sikh's income called as Dasvand. These are paid by Sikh community to support Guru Ka Langar (communal kitchens) and the building of Gurudwara Sahib.

Guru Arjan Dev was very famous among his supporters. He ardently taught the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and spread the message of the philosophy of Guru Nanak
