Anang Trayodashi Festival is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Shiva. Anang Trayodashi is observed in the lunar Chaitra month on the 13th day (‘Trayodashi’) of the Shukla Paksha. The importance of the Anang Trayodashi Vrat is mentioned in the Ancient Vedic texts like Garuda Purana. According to the Gregorian calendar, Anang Trayodashi date corresponds to the months of March-April. However, in North India, it falls in the ‘Margashirsha’ month.

 

During this auspicious celebrations, devotees worship Anang (Kamdev) and Rati for a period of one year. There is a strong belief that one who observes this Fast (Vrat) with full devotion and enthusiasm will be blessed with wealth, success, good health and prosperity. As per the legends, Kamdev (Lord Manmatha) was once burnt into ashes by Bhagwan Shiva (Mahesh), just before the Tarakasura Vadha.

Kamdev’s wife, Devi Rati then offered prayers and devotion to Lord Shiva. Pleased by her austerity Lord Mahesh (Shiv) returned Kamdev as ‘Anang’. The Kamdev’s wife could only see Kamdev with complete body, but the rest could only see his head. On this special day, Hindu believers worship Lord Shiva along with Kamdev and Devi Rati, his spouse.

 

It is also believed that one who loyally performs the Vrat as well as other rituals on this auspicious day will be blessed by Lord Shiva and ultimately seek Moksha (salvation). The observer of the Anang Trayodashi Vrat is also bestowed with happiness and longevity. Marital Bliss and Fruitful family relations are a few great benefits of observing the Anang Trayodashi Fast.
